Complicated Large Party

Hannah Asks:

“I’ve got quite the restaurant question for you… there will be 6 of us on Saturday- one kosher, one vegitarian… I was looking for a mid-range priced place with a fun environment, good food (of course) and somewhere that won’t be too loud/hard to hear each other. I live in Murray Hill, two live in Gramercy and two out of towners are on 49th and lex… I’d love to have any ideas of a place nearer than farther- I’d rather not compete with the downtown rush or west, west side restaurant craziness on a saturday :) As for type of food, I was thinking Mexican as it is usually easy for everyone to find something…but, this is where you come in! A place with many options would probably be best.”

My first impulse would be Fig & Olive, on 52nd, between 5th and Madison - a modern take on Greek food.  First of all, the food is fantastic and the space is beautiful.  My main reason for this being my strongest recommendation, though are some absolutely delicious vegetarian options.  The zucchini carpaccio is fantastic… the crostini are fresh and delicious… and the pastas are great.  I think everyone will find something quite nicely.  It might be a hair on the pricier side though… entrees are in the $20-$30 range.

In terms of Mexican, it’s going to be tough to get something quiet.  Rosa Mexicana (58 and 1st Ave) is fun and the food is good… but I’m not sure it’s what you’re after - depending on the night and crowd, it can get pretty lively.  The menu shouldn’t be a problem for your constraints and if you’re up for something a little louder, I wouldn’t hesitate to go.

My last option might be a little in left field, but I always think that Indian is a great option for vegetarian/kosher friends.  I like Chola on 58, btwn 2nd and 4rd Ave.  The menu is pretty typical Indian, which of course has some great veggie options - and it’s prepared wonderfully.  What I really like about it is the modern, sophisticated space that isn’t stuffy and isn’t an afterthought as it tends to be with many Indian restaurants.  So if you’re up for Indian, I think it’s a great option.

Well that’s what I have for now.. let me know if you have any questions!
